Winter Chill Lingers Across Deep South, Florida

The cold snap plaguing the Deep South and Florida likely peaked last night,
but there will be several more days of cool afternoon and
at least one more morning of frigid temperatures.

The weekend recovery will be short-lived, as a major arctic outbreak
will plunge into the South and the Sunshine State by early next week.

Arctic Blast Will Freeze Florida Once Again ...

The second arctic blast in as many weeks is settling across the Eastern U.S., bringing a deep freeze as far south as Florida. This blast, however, is much colder than the last and will be the coldest air of the season by far in the southern U.S.

The Upper Plains and Midwest have felt the deep freeze since this weekend where highs hovered in the single digits from North Dakota to Wisconsin. Lows Monday morning brought subzero temperatures, but biting winds produced wind chills of 30 to 40 below zero in Duluth and International Falls, Minn. This arctic express now has its eyes on the Ohio Valley, Tennessee Valley and the Southeast for Tuesday morning.

Lows on Tuesday are expected to drop to the single digits from St. Louis to Paducah, Ky. Farther south, lows in the teens will settle from Memphis, Tenn., to Charlotte, N.C. In the Deep South lows will also drop to the teens and 20s, triggering Hard Freeze Warnings from Louisiana to southern Georgia.

The frigid air won`t stop there however, as Florida will see some of its coldest December air in years. Record lows that could be threatened Tuesday morning are:

. Tallahassee: 19 degrees
. Jacksonville: 24 degrees
. Tampa: 28 degrees
. Orlando 29 degrees
. Miami: 35 degrees
. Key West: 50 degrees

Because of this, much of Florida also has a Hard Freeze Warning in effect, from the Panhandle southward to Ocala. The Tampa Bay area has a Freeze Warning in effect through Tuesday morning, and the rest of South Florida is under a Wind Chill Warning, including Orlando southward to Miami. The very windy conditions that brought the sub-zero wind chills in the Upper Midwest will help keep much of Florida feeling like it`s in the teens and 20s in the morning, and 30s and 40s during the afternoon.

Usually the Florida Keys are fairly immune from strong cold snaps due to their far southern location and proximity to relatively warm water. It appears that this cold blast may break records there as well. Key West`s record low on Tuesday is 50 degrees, set back in 1952. This may very well be threatened as lows are expected to drop to the upper 40s and lower 50s. Moreover, Key West`s record low maximum temperature for Tuesday is 57 degrees, set in 1962. Highs in the Keys are only expected to hit the middle 50s and this record could be broken as well.

Looking ahead this week, there is good news for the residents of Florida and the snowbirds that flock there to escape winter`s chill. This cold spell won`t last long, as temperatures are expected to warm back to the 60s and 70s by mid-to-late week.

Record-Breaking Temperatures Greet Locals
By: DINAH VOYLES PULVER,

Student tries to keep warm as she
travels between classes Monday.

Icicles and freezing temperatures greeted many this morning with the temperature still dropping just after daylight.

At 7:45 a.m. the temperature bottomed out at Daytona Beach International Airport at about 24, breaking the previous record of 26, set in 1962, according to the National Weather Service. At 8 a.m. it had been below freezing in Pierson and Daytona Beach for seven hours.

Forecasters say it's likely the cold also will set a record for the lowest high temperature today.

The previous record was 52, also set in 1962.
