Massachusetts Man arrested 143 times

MIDDLEBORO,MA. —

Local police officials familiar with Derek M. Lindsay say the Taunton man should have been taken off the streets long ago.

Lindsay, 36, has been arraigned in court 143 times — most recently on a slew of drug charges in Taunton this month and in connection with a stabbing in Middleboro in March.

“How many times do you actually have to be convicted before someone says, you need to take a break for a while and go to jail and think about what you’ve done?” said Taunton police Lt. Paul Roderick.

Middleboro police Lt. Peter Andrade blamed “liberal Massachusetts courts” for repeat offenders such as Lindsay.

In March, Lindsay was arrested in Middleboro and charged with attempted murder and other charges in connection with a stabbing at a tattoo parlor.

On June 4, Lindsay spit in the face of a young woman who was walking in downtown Middleboro and threatened her, according to police, who issued a warrant for his arrest after the incident.

Then on June 12, Lindsay was arrested on drug and weapons charges at his apartment at 671 County St. in Taunton. The charges included possession with intent to distribute cocaine, marijuana, illegal steroids and psilocybine mushrooms, Roderick said. Other charges included carrying a dangerous weapon and possession of ammunition without a license to carry, Roderick said.

Bail for the drug charges was set at $5,000, despite a request by the district attorney that bail be set at $20,000, Miliote said. That means that Lindsay could be freed on bail if the 60 days from the prior case expires, Miliote said.

Lindsay made national news in May 2007 after attempting to fight with parents, and later police, at a McDonald’s playground in Taunton, after he urged his child to push other kids out of the way to get closer to clowns making balloon animals.

Middleboro police Lt. David M. Mackiewicz said Lindsay is a third-generation resident, who grew up in the working-class West Street neighborhood on the west side of town.

Lt. Andrade said Lindsay’s “full spectrum” criminal record spans his entire adult life.
