Salmon Season Cancelled On Penobscot

Salmon Season Cancelled On Penobscot

State officials have decided to cancel the monthlong catch-and-release Atlantic Salmon season on the Penobscot River. It was scheduled to begin Saturday.

The state allowed a catch-and-release season on a 3-mile stretch of the Penobscot just north of Bangor last spring for the first time in 10 years. But federal regulators met with Governor John baldacci and the Atlantic Salmon Commission last week urging them to scrap the season this year and focus on recovery of the species.

Federal officials are deciding whether to list salmon in the Penobscot, Kennebec and Androscoggin rivers as endangered. Maine officials are asking that the fish be listed as threatened, rather than endangered.
