UMaine Graduate Launches The Ipointer

It seems like everything you could ever want is right on your cell phone or portable digital assistant, but now you can also have your own navigation system and tour guide.

University of Maine in Orono is the starting ground for a device called the iPointer, a device that will guide you around a college campus, historical buildings, cities and even let you look at real estate.

Chris Frank, a UMO graduate created the iPointer which he says is easy to use. You just point at the building you want to know more about, press a button, and audio, video and text information all pop up on your screen.

He says, "you can imagine in the future a cell phone enabled with our products, an iPointer enabled cell phone. It uses GPS and a digital compass so you know what angle it is being pointed to. Based on position and angle, point at something, press a button and it goes to a wireless network database. The iPointer selects the object and provides video, audio text on cell phone."

Frank's company, Intelligent Spatial Technologies, hopes to launch the device in Orono by the summer for campus tours.
